Bill Maher’s at it again.
The man who brought you “Politically Incorrect,” which ABC eventually took off the air in 2002 after Maher made a comment on live radio that the 9/11 terrorists were not cowards, but “we [the American government] have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away,” might just have hit home with the political right. Starting today, Queens’ P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center , a MoMA affiliate, will present Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 15-hour epic film version of Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz.
Orginally aired in 1979/80 as a 14-part series on German public television, Fassbinder’s masterpiece, running a total of 930 minutes, was recently restorated and released on DVD.
Apart from being able to see the episodes in 14 distinct screening rooms, visitors will have the opportunity to read the storyboard, see magnified stills and listen to audiotapes of Fassbinder dictating the script.
Fassbinder: Berlin Alexanderplatz was previously shown at Kunstwerke Berlin. P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is located at 22-25 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City. Directions are availabe here.

Fox News claims that German officials told their U.S. colleagues that they would oppose new sanctions against Iran but “would privately welcome, while publicly protesting, an American bombing campaign against Iran’s nuclear facilities.”
Certainly a rather surprising if not shocking revelation, assuming it’s true.

A lot can be said about Potsdam. Probably most of the stuff is true.
Located a stone’s throw west of Berlin, Potsdam drew national attention on Easter Sunday 2006, as a German-Ethiopian husband and father was sent into a coma by the blow to the head by an assumed, yet unidentified, right extremist. It was a punch on the nose for a nation, desperately fighting to move past its all too tragic past.

As the Dixie Chicks documentary ‘Shut Up and Sing!’ came to European theaters only recently, the US audience is way ahead in the discussion about it. I watched it the other day and I’m still not sure about what to think about this.
Are they the heroines as which many people see them? Certainly not. Are they politicly conscious at all? Maybe now they are. But they seemed not to have been back then. [Read more]

On August 23 the House of World Cultures (or: Haus der Kulturen der Welt) will be reopening after a year-long refurbishment. The great news for all Berlin dwellers or those who have the opportunity to get there is that they have a compelling program in stock for us:
A two-month arts and cultural program featuring New York and marking the 50th birthday of the building. The New York festival offers a perspective on the city’s current art scene as well as on cultural and historical developments since the 1960s, featuring art, music, literature, performances and film.
