The Good American
Who is the one-man-wonder from the USA who had a whole generation of fräuleins screaming at the top of their lungs? The sex symbol with the schmaltzy pop-tunes and the trademark hairdo? Quick, time is up. No! Not David Hasseloff, there is one pop star who Germans love even more:
Elvis of course! He embodied the good side of America; the charming, big smile boy caught Germany in a storm. He sang the GI Blues and served his Army time in Friedberg. That’s a little more than just having the right song out when the wall comes down, Mr. Hasselhoff.
Sadly, it was also in Germany where Elvis got introduced to amphetamines, and we all know how this ended – on a cold toilet floor in “Graceland” on August 16th, thirty years ago. The German TV commemorates the King’s death with a line-up of movies, documentaries and concerts. Which just goes to show: Elvis is alive, at least on TV. Just as the German fascination for the America of the fifties and sixties.
