As this article points out, American politicians are running away from the Muslim vote and Muslim Americans have allowed the stereotypes attributed to them to have their vote marginalized and disenfranchised. A case could be made that the Muslim vote in this country during this election season may have become depressed, suppressed, and oppressed. Congressman Ellison's challenge wasn't to win his election but was to actually have him serve in our Congress as a Muslim. It was as if a terrorist had try to enter the Capitol building with a free pass. Yet, our Constitution MANDATES no religious test or affirmation to hold public office. Recently, Senator Lieberman became the latest in the long line of politicians to support a religious litmus test to hold public office. The "silly few" campaign against Muslims in this country having the right to vote along with other silliness. However, their agenda isn't silly and has gained traction amongst a majority of
Americans. What this article doesn't point out is that the growing purposeful marginalization and disenfranchisement of the Muslim vote here in America combined with the growing anti-Muslim rhetoric from the far-right could create another 9/11 terrorist attack or riots like the ones we've seen in Europe.

Note from the author:
I wrongfully listed Katrin Simon as an assistant prof. of Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin. Rather, she is a PhD student in Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin, specializing in African American Islam.

I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused.

Sincerely, Peter Dahl
